School of Viviology

When it comes to skin caring, confusion is common. Luckily, we know one of the best ingredients in skincare is knowledge.

Follow our six-class series with your professor, James Vivian, and claim your "degree" in Viviology: the study of great skin.

LESSON 1 - UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

First thing's first, do you know you? And by you, I mean do you understand the skin you live in? Understanding your skin's type, wants and needs is critical when talking about skincare. This will ensure you are using the correct products and routine that will buy you a one-way ticket to beautiful skin.

Lesson Learnings:

  • What are the key skin types and how to identify which one you have
  • Sensitive vs sensitized - how to tell the difference

LESSON 2 - BUILDING YOUR BASICS

When beginning a new skincare journey, we should think of a less is best approach. Nailing the basics first is a must. During this class, I will discuss the holy trinity of skincare (cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen) and how to get the best out of your core products.

Lesson Learnings:

  • Cleansing - don't underestimate getting it right
  • How to find the perfect moisturiser
  • Suncare - the most important lesson in my books

LESSON 3 - EXFOLIATION

We know that exfoliation can sound scary but, it's time to learn how to get exfoliants to work for us, not against us (bye, bye 90s Apricot Scrub). Our skin naturally grows and generates new skin cells however, as we age the process of cell regeneration slows down. If we do not properly clean our skin from build-up it can result in dull complexion, excess oil, clogged pores and blemishes. (Big no, no!) Think of exfoliation as - out with the old and in with the new.

Lesson Learnings:

  • The benefits of exfoliation
  • The different types of exfoliations: chemical, physical and mechanical
  • Personalising your frequency and use

LESSON 4 - THE As, Bs & Cs

Serums are the fairy godmother of skincare. They are a lightweight and thin textured product, packed with active ingredients that can create results like magic (voilà!) With an overwhelming amount of ingredients that are found in skincare, I will break down the importance of serums and how their concentrated formula will soon become your new favourites.

Lesson Learnings:

  • What are serums and how to pick the best one for your skin type and concern
  • The big three's: Vitamin A, B & C. What are they and why are they good for you skin?

LESSON 5 - LAYERING + MATCHING

Now that we have the 'what' of our skincare routine, let's look at the 'how.' I can assure you that there is a method to the madness and in this class, I will go over the gold standard of layering and pairing your favourite products.

Lesson Learnings:

  • The AM & PM standard skincare routine
  • What is layering and how to master the sequence
  • The dos and don'ts of mixing ingredients

LESSON 6 - TROUBLESHOOTING

SOS! Is your skin just not that into you? As with any new journey, there will be roadblocks along the way. In this class, I will talk about some of the most common skincare issues, confusions and questions. Just call me your new dermal therapist on speed dial. (nice one!)

Lesson Learnings:

  • How to treat a pimple
  • What to do when you have impaired your skin barrier
  • Gotten too much sun? (Ouch!)
